Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Many people require tooth extraction of their wisdom teeth. Also known as third molars, these are the teeth nestling right at the very back of your mouth. Not everybody has them, but if they appear, it usually happens between the ages of 17 and 25. Very often they dont come through and instead become impacted (wedged against bone or existing teeth and thus unable to emerge fully), necessitating tooth extraction of the wisdom teeth.

This is not the only option - in some cases there is enough room for wisdom teeth to come through, alternatively they can stay impacted but cause no trouble. However when they need to come out, tooth extraction is the only option. There are a myriad of reasons why this might be the case, including whether these are causing abscesses, tooth decay or infection of the surrounding bone or gums.

Wisdom teeth extraction is also helpful in preventing gum disease or tooth decay in those back hard to reach teeth, and for alleviating painful and/or swollen gums caused by a tooth that has only partially broken through. For many the benefits of tooth extraction are weighted towards the fact it helps with crowding in the back of the mouth.

At G & E Dental we perform this procedure in-house for routine removals, however if you have a high risk of potential complications we will refer you to a specialist. The recovery period for wisdom teeth extraction is a few days; more so if all your wisdom teeth are being removed.
